Higginson was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1823. He was a descendant of Francis Higginson, a Puritan minister and immigrant to the colony of Massachusetts Bay. George Sewall Boutwell (1818-1905) was an active political figure and lawyer all his life. Initially a Democrate, his antislavery leanings made him a prominent Free Soiler who was elected Governor and susequently reelected by the dominant Massachusetts Free Soil coalition in 1851-1852.
